Corner December 2005:
2005
is fast becoming history and our attention is now drawn towards the New Year
and
both its old and new challenges. From a
program standpoint the Chapter starts the
year
off at its January VGT meeting with a talk by Dennis Mewshaw
and February’s
Boulder City meeting with Part II of
Electricity given by Mike Perger. Dennis Mewshaw
is the
Manager of Airport Planning for Clark
County and will be
speaking on all the planning
for the
new Ivanpah Airport project. Mike Perger of course needs no introduction to those
of you
who participated in his first talk on electricity and electrical systems
earlier in the year.
The
meeting schedule for the entire year will be posted on the Web Site after the
last meeting of 2005.
By
way of a reminder as well the last meeting is the traditional Ice Cream Social
at VGT on the 14th.
There
was an interesting contrast between the Discover Aviation event and the Boulder
City Day
as far
as the turnout for Young Eagle participants.
Mike Smith and crew are to be congratulated
for
flying close to a hundred youngsters at Boulder. The turnout at Jean was an under whelming
less
than forty youngsters for the two day event which casts a cloud over the
continuance of
Discover
Aviation in its present form clearly making this one of the challenges for the
New Year.
One
thing stands out at any of these Young Eagle events aside from the efforts of
the individual
pilots
is the more than generous volunteer effort on the part of the ladies who man
the registration
and
assignment desk. They have been and
continue to be the public’s first contact with the
Young
Eagle program and are to be congratulated for their outstanding effort and
tremendous patience.
Our
thanks and appreciation for a job more than well done to Jan Bonelli, Phyllis
Wyatt, Gail Smith,
Jean Carter, Mavis Rangan, Renie Younghans and Linda
Frasier.
A
continuing problem left over from this year for those of us building aircraft
at VGT is the FSDO
ban on
first flights for experimental type aircraft.
The issue is still very much open despite the FSDO position.
More
importantly is an underlying factor of a mindless bureaucracy blindly
ruling. I do not believe that any
reasonable individual would be upset with this group or for that matter any
governmental agency if the
agency
in question was up front in disclosing the details of their decision and its
rationale.
In
the present situation the FSDO has not been forthcoming on anything except
effectively to say no.
No
rationale except to say literally the “sky may fall” which only makes us wonder
what they may be hiding.
On
a personal note my thanks for the support, help and concern of the Chapter
officers and directors this year.
Thanks
to Paul Gerner for his work in the Air Academy
candidate recruitment process, we had a winner
in
this year’s candidate in Sarah Metcalf.
My very best wishes to you all for a wonderful
Holiday Season and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Regards
and safe flying,
David
Lerner, President
